Extensive EU subsidies to green steel ventures risk repeating past mistakes reminiscent of the steel crises of the 1960s and 1970s. While history suggests caution, the critical lesson here is the necessity of rigorous economic evaluations prior to committing substantial public resources. Cost–benefit analysis provides a tool for ensuring informed, economically sound decisions in the emerging green steel sector.

Empowering offshore wind with ES-STATCOM for stability margin improvement and provision of grid-forming capabilities

Offshore wind power plants (WPPs) play a pivotal role in achieving a CO2-neutral electricity sector. However, their grid connection presents significant challenges and costs. High-voltage alternating current (HVAC) offers a cost-effective solution, but it may necessitate the installation of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) at the onshore bus to ensure stability and compliance with connection requirements. Integrating energy storage into the STATCOM (ES-STATCOM) enables the provision of ancillary services, such as inertial response and frequency support, which require active power.

Limiting global warming to close to 1.5°C by 2100 requires deep and rapid greenhouse gas emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals (CDR) on a massive scale, presenting a remarkable scaling challenge. This paper focuses on the financing of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) in Sweden. BECCS is one of the most prominent CDR methods in 1.5°C-compatible global emission scenarios and has been assigned a specific role in Swedish policy for net-zero.

They could export large amounts of electricity and hydrogen, supplying mainland Europe and abroad. But where and when should wind, PV and green fuel production capacity be built, and what kind of infrastructure is needed? Within the Nordics—who can/will become a net exporter of electricity and green fuels?

Putting energy infrastructure into place: A systematic review

For twenty years, social scientists have used place concepts to understand energy infrastructure siting. Much of this research stemmed from attempts to provide theoretical explanations that avoid pejorative NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) assumptions about community objections. Despite a burgeoning literature, a comprehensive review of place-related energy infrastructure research is lacking. This paper addresses this gap for the first time by collating and systematically reviewing a corpus of 190 articles published between January 1999 and March 2022, using search terms combining ‘energy’ and five place concepts (place attachment, sense of place, place identity, identity of a place, place-technology fit).

External Inertia Emulation to Facilitate Active-Power Limitation in Grid-Forming Converters

The aim of this paper is to present a grid-forming (GFM) control strategy with a novel active-power loop (APL) structure facilitating limitation of active power while providing maximum available inertial support. This is achieved by decoupling the synchronization duties of the APL from the inertial support. The latter is provided by calculating the active-power reference through a dedicated inertia-emulation loop (IEL), which is connected in cascade with the APL. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through laboratory experiments including frequency transients of varying size and unbalanced operating conditions.

The feasibility of climate action: Bridging the inside and the outside view through feasibility spaces

The feasibility of different options to reduce the risks of climate change has engaged scholars for decades. Yet there is no agreement on how to define and assess feasibility. We define feasible as“do-able under realistic assumptions.” A sound feasibility assessment is based on causal reasoning; enables compari- son of feasibility across climate options, contexts, and implementation levels; and reflexively considers the agency of its audience. Global climate scenarios are a good starting point for assessing the feasibility of climate options since they represent causal pathways, quantify implementation levels, and consider policy choices.

Balancing Electricity Supply and Demand in a Carbon-Neutral Northern Europe

This work investigates how to balance the electricity supply and demand in a carbon-neutral northern Europe. Applying a cost-minimizing electricity system model including options to invest in eleven different flexibility measures, and cost-efficient combinations of strategies to manage variations were identified.
